Dolomite crystals range from transparent to translucent, but dolomite grains in rocks are typically translucent or nearly opaque. The luster ranges from sub vitreous to dull. Dolomite, like calcite, cleaves into six-sided polyhedrons with diamond-shaped faces.
Uses of Dolomite Grains
Dolomite is used as a source of magnesium metal and of magnesia (MgO), which is a constituent of refractory bricks. Dolostone is often used instead of limestone as an aggregate for both cement and bitumen mixes and also as a flux in blast furnaces. The use of dolostone as a flux has increased, especially since environmental contamination has become a widely heeded consideration, because the resulting slag can be employed for such things as lightweight aggregate, whereas that formed when limestone is used cannot. Such is the case because dolostone-based slag does not slake (disintegrate in water), but limestone-based slag does.

Dolomite Mineral

Dolomite is also a common mineral in hydro-thermal veins. There it is often associated with barite, fluorite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, or sphalerite. In these veins it often occurs as rhombohedral crystals which sometimes have curved faces.

“Dolomite mineral” is a word that is used by geologists in two different way
s:
1) as the name of the mineral dolomite
2) as the name of a rock known as dolomite, dolostone, or dolomite rock.

Dolomite Mineral originates in the same sedimentary environments as limestone i.e. in warm, shallow, marine environments where calcium carbonate (CaCO3) mud accumulates in the form of shell debris, fecal material, coral fragments, and carbonate precipitates. Dolomite is thought to form when the calcite in carbonate mud or limestone is modified by magnesium-rich groundwater. The available magnesium facilitates the conversion of calcite into dolomite.
